Self-care matters and is an important part of maintaining good health and well-being. I know it can be hard sometimes to know where to start when it comes to taking care of yourself. You can begin the start of your self-care with little and small actions at a time.
Your first priority is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. This is extremely important. Aim for 7-9 hours a night and try to stick to a consistent bedtime routine.
Next, you need some time each day for yourself. Make sure you move more during the day, this helps your circulation. This is not about hitting the gym every day. Quick walks around the block or even just moving to music in the kitchen while you cook so that you can help boost your mood and energy levels.
Self-Care Tips
It would be a good idea to explore what makes you feel good so, write a list of activities that you enjoy. Remember to be realistic about what you can commit to and do the ones you choose every day.
Think about how you would like to start your day. Consider writing it down as if you are creating a self-care plan that has three things you will do consistently every morning to start your day and three things you will do before you settle for the night.
Don't be hard on yourself if it doesn't stick at first - it may be that you need to reduce it to one or two things instead. Be consistent and do these consistently to form a habit that is ultimately good for your wellbeing.
Creating a daily self-care routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some examples of simple routines that you can incorporate into your day:
- Wake up early and take 2 minutes in stillness. Just listen to sounds in the room.
- Drink a full glass of water – Do a full body stretch, focusing on the neck and shoulders
- Make the bed
- Take a shower, and brush your teeth.
- Listen to music you like while you make breakfast (not the radio)
- Grab your orange juice or coffee and consider watching favourite meditation video for 5 mins
- Get dressed and consider recording your thoughts in a diary or just feel present and at the moment.
Do take self-care seriously. You do matter. Self-care matters.
